HENNING XO
The wristwatch that should have been made
Halda Watch Co. was founded in 1887 by watchmaker and entrepreneur Henning Hammarlund as the first watch manufacturing facility in northern Europe. To meet his own exacting standards he built his own machines that were used to produce every component for the watch movements, no matter how small. Each watch took ten months and 3,000 separate steps and tests to complete. The cost of a Halda timepiece was the equivalent of seven months’ salary for an ordinary worker at the time.
Halda is the basis for several other successful Swedish companies. These include fishing reel manufacturer ABU Garcia and Haldex, the producer of four-wheel drive and gearboxes for Porsche, Bugatti and Lamborghini. All this is thanks to Henning and the expertise in fine mechanics in general and pocket watches in particular that existed in Svängsta at the end of the 19th century.
A tribute to our founder
The unique heritage of Halda is reflected in our latest timepiece. The watch is a tribute to founder Henning Hammarlund and the beautiful pocket watches he developed over a century ago. The new model Halda Henning XO measures 40 mm in diameter and is made entirely in 18K solid gold with the tone of Swedish red gold, just like the old pocket watches.
More than a century old movement
The heart of the watch is essentially a movement where every single part of which was made in Sweden more than 100 years ago at the end of the 19th century. The almost antique movement has been further developed by today’s watchmakers at Halda. A new bridge has been designed and decorated and new gearwheels have been made from scratch. All this in order to move the small second hand so that the winding stem and crown is on the right side like a traditional wristwatch. The result is a timepiece with a strong connection to the Halda watches of that time and what would have been a natural step away from the classic pocket watches.

Henning’s ingenuity led the way
A 19th century production technical reason allows our watchmakers of today to modify the movement to move the second hand. A critical step in the production of the old Halda movements was the setting of the bearing stones for the movement. As this was done by hand according to tradition for fine workmanship, the part where the stone is to be set had to be centered around the bearing and this became a major problem for an entire movement base. To solve this issue, a special train and escapement disk was developed containing the setting stones for the third wheel, second wheel, escape wheel, palate fork and balance. The disk is set into the base from the outside. The train and escapement disk is 14 mm in diameter and 1.0 mm thick, making it an easy-to-handle detail for setting the stones. Today’s watchmakers at Halda Watch Co. have manufactured a new disk including a wheels so that the sub-second position is at 6 o’clock.
